Happy Mother’s Day

Happy mother’s day to all mothers everywhere.

I won’t see my mum until next week – so happy mother’s day mum (yes, she does read my blog).  A photo of me and my mum taken a few years ago !??!

Thanks to you all for your comments on pet insurance – we are going to put money in an account each month specifically for Big Hum and Little Cat.  We couldn’t find an insurance company that would insure 10yrs + cats for life.

What happened to Bournvita?

When I was little – actually I think that should be younger as I’ve never been little!!

I would be given a mug of warm Bournvita if I was feeling under the weather.  This afternoon I felt like a mug of Bournvita – but we didn’t have any so DaddyHen kindly went to the shops looking for Bournvita only to come home empty handed with the news that it’s not been sold for years!?!? He did bring back another brand of malted drink but it wasn’t the same

What – ok so we don’t have it very often but really - Cadbury no longer sell it in the UK.

What things to you remember from years ago or childhood that are no longer available?

Pet Insurance – to have or not to have

Do you have pet insurance for your pets?  We don’t - we used to. 11 years ago Mr Hum was hit by a car we had insurance and thank goodness we did as money was very tight and the bill was over £3,500.

After that the insurance co increased the payments (we had three cats back then) and the monthly cost was £46 for all three back in 2000.  The annual jabs weren’t included and any scrapes they got into always seemed to be just below the £75 excess.  So we decided to cancel and since then haven’t had pet insurance and we have never had a huge bill.
Little cats accident has cost £2,567 so far - there’s still an operation to come in a few weeks.  DaddyHen thinks we should insure – I don’t well not with an insurance company.  We now have two cats who are 12½ and 10½ - 10yrs old seems to be the magic age after which the premiums go very high and lots of things are excluded.  I think we should put the premium in a box specifically for the cats – DaddyHen want to take out a policy.

We were very fortunate to have had the money in cash – no credit cards here!!!.  We still met the monthly goals – except one which was to put money aside for some ground works in the garden and some house maintenance during late spring but that can wait.

Have we been foolish or have we been wise not having insurance? 12 years of paying £46 each month = £6,624 we are still £4,057 better off over the past 12 years.
Would you insure or put the money in a Cat Box?

It’s been a beautiful day

The sun has shone, the doors and windows have beenwide open, and I felt a real uplift today.  Daffs in the trough at the front of the house.

Crocus in the back garden.

How was your day?

Ta dah Granny square patchwork blanket…

With everything that’s been going on with Little Cat I’d forgotten to show you my finished granny square patchwork blanket.  Well here it is –

It’s all Stylecraft Special DK, its 25 x 27 squares, each square is 3 rounds and it fits my king size bed with plenty of overhang on each side, I used the JAYG (join as you go) method of joining the squares together.

The boarder is 8 rounds; 4 rounds of granny, 2 rounds of double, 1 round of popcorn, 1 round of granny with long centre stitch and a final round of 2 trebles 2 chain 2 trebles all in the same space.

I’m already planning the next blanket – I do love to crochet but I prefer to crochet something with a purpose.  In the meantime I’m making a smaller blanket again out of Stylecraft Special DK but with all the different colours I have in my stash.

Here’s the progress so far – still have another 5 colours to go – not sure whether to do join them randomly or do a row of each colour – umm will have to think about it.
